柘榴舘 Zine vol.5
Volume 5 ~Reflection~
Issued in November 1999.
(Cover)(Contents)(Pg 4)Issued in November 1999.
Illustration by EBIWO, now going by EBIO. Very guro. You can see the bullet points from the contents page going through because it was too much work to scan each page individually and the paper is thin. I’m guilty.
(Pg 5)
Illustration by Yumeko Hoshina, who designed the cover this time. Angsty words, maybe a poem. It is titled ‘春日狂想’ but I don’t know what that means.
(Pg 6 & 7)
Writing about philosopher Johann Gottlieb Fichte, self-awareness and self-consciousness which I presume is how this volume got its title of ‘reflection’. Lotus flower picture credit to DIA.
(Pg 8-11) are undecorated pages with similar musings about philosophy, this time about mirrors and illusions. Which is my image? Which is the real me? Very Alice through the looking glass, but ultimately not relevant or interesting enough to include.(Pg 12 & 13)
Double page titled ‘My Best Film’ with a terribly photocopied promo poster (not my doing) and description for the 1986 film GOTHIC by Ken Russell. Maybe it came out in Japan a year later because they wrote the release date as 1987. I have no comment on this because I haven’t watched it and don’t plan to, but it’s nice that someone apparently had it as one of their favourites.
(Pg 14 & 15)
Introduction to Repulsion (1965) by Roman Polanski. The author says that Catherine Deneuve is their favourite (good taste) paired with another poorly photocopied still from the movie. Also introduces Trancemission (1999) by Eiki Takahashi. It’s very likely they mention it because of its promotional PS game ‘Trancemission VJ mix’ in collaboration with The Yellow Monkey, which was a super popular band at the time. When I was looking up about this movie I found that it is a sci-fi drama and unfortunately not the documentary short of the same name and release year about a FtM trans person. That could have been a cool take for the reflection theme.
(Game reference)(Pg 16 & 17, Pg 18)
Consideration of visuals on how eyesight affects our other senses. It’s poignant to me because I have a mild fear of permanently losing my sight since it would mean I couldn’t enjoy looking at beautiful things and my collections anymore. But you would still have touch, taste, hearing and smell, so there would still be ways to appreciate decadence. Includes an iconic photo of Clara Bow’s eye makeup in the 1920s.
(Pg 19)Beautiful photo of the author’s dolls with a link to their website.
(Pg 20 & 21)More religious iconography and words about staircases
(Pg 22)Illustration and writings by Yumeko Hoshino. Of course, I have to rely on google translate, but there seems to be something in there about a cat disguising itself as a rabbit. If this is true then I wonder what the author’s feelings would be about Usakumya, 3 years later. Hey, does it say it wears a red ribbon too?!
(Obligatory Usakumya reference)(Pg 23)
Illustration by EBIO. Can you make out the text? I can’t.
(Pg 24) is a notice of the price of the zine and where it can be purchased. It also introduces Vol.6’s theme of ‘dreams’, scheduled to be published in April of 2000. (Pg 25) is the publishing info and list of previous volumes.
